Student Association Response to Suspension of Fountain Day

In response to the University canceling Fountain Day 2011 in response to the Kegs and Eggs riots, Student Association President Justin Wax Jacobs has released the following statement Sunday afternoon:

"The decision by the University to cancel Fountain Day affects every student. The Student Association, with the greater sentiment of the student population, is disappointed with the decision. This decision was made completely by the University with no input by Student Association or any student leader. President Philip and the administration have taken full responsibility for the decision and although we respect their candor, we don't ultimately agree with the result.

Fountain Day is funded by the University, with a small portion of the funding coming from the Student Association's annual sponsorship of the event. At present, our position with the appropriated funds for our Fountain Day sponsorship are currently under discussion. Earlier in the academic year, in consultation with Vice President Leah Rotella and Director of Programming Joe Bonilla, we had previously decided to remove the concert from Fountain Day to ensure that there will be an event to enjoy the conclusion of the 2010-2011 academic year.

As an organization, we are committed to stepping up to the plate and making up for the cancellation of Fountain Day in anyway possible with our resources. Furthermore, we also ask, while there may be an overwhelming tide of resentment and the need to voice this resentment, we ask that students do not take any negative action as both the Albany Police Department and University Police Department are prepared take action against those who create unrest in the coming weeks. Any response to the decision should be and will be taken up by SA and student leaders to voice the concerns of the student body as a whole.

The last thing that any student needs is to be arrested, not only will there be a permanent mark on their record and reputation, but on the University as well."

2011 Student Group Purple and Gold Awards: Call for Nominations!

The Student Association Office of Student Group Affairs is now seeking nominations for the 2011 Student Group Purple and Gold Awards! Students are eligible to self-nominate their own groups and/or nominate other active groups on campus, and a panel of both Student Association officials and University at Albany staff will determine the award winners.

There are categories for both student group awards and individual student awards including – but not limited to – community service awards, programming awards and Student Group of the Year. A full list of award descriptions and copies of the nomination form will be available in the Student Association Office, Office of Student Involvement and Leadership and on the Student Association website as of Monday, March 14th. (These documents will also be e-mailed to the Executive Board of all Student Association recognized student organizations.)

Nomination forms will be due back to the Student Association office (Campus Center 116) by 5:00 pm on Monday, April 4th. If you have any questions regarding the nomination and/or selection process, please contact Student Group Affairs Director Nicole Jean at njean@uamail.albany.edu.

NEW POSITION AVAILABLE

The Assistant Director of Public Relations position is an essential part of the Department of Marketing for the Student Association. This position calls for a a minimum of 2-3 press releases weekly pertaining to news within the Student Association such as department events and marketing efforts. Other responsibilities include coordinating all media for Student Association events such as Speaker Series or concerts; will also be appointed to lead or assist in various small scale marketing/advertising projects such as SA Free Day or SA Cares. Application deadlines have been extended and will be accepted through Monday March 14th.

Ronald McDonald House

Next week (2/14-2/18) we are going to be tabling for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. 'RMHC' is an organization that raises money for families with children facing a medical crisis. Often they need to travel far to get the medical treatment that their child needs.

The RMHC provides a 'home away from home' for these families so they have somewhere to stay 'close to their hospitalized child at little or no cost.' (RMHC.ORG for more information) Every year they raise money by hanging hearts that are used as a donation.

We will be working with the 'hearts comittee' to raise as much money as possible next week in the LC's. As someone makes a donation, we will give them a paper heart to write their name on. We will then be able to hang it on one of the panels in the LC's. Tabling will take place from 10:00a.m.-4p.m. everyday of next week.

Each day someone will be standing by the Campus Center with a purple shirt on. The first person to mention that Bill Clinton is coming to UAlbany will immediately be entered to win a pair of tickets to the event. Everyday a photo of the person who is being entered to win will be uploaded.

For more than 30 years, the University at Albany Alumni Association has provided scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students to help continue UAlbany’s tradition of excellence and opportunity. We are pleased to announce funding for the following student scholarships for 2010-2011. We would appreciate your publicizing these awards to ensure a diverse group of qualified applications.

Spirit Scholarship ($1,000): Awarded to three UAlbany students who demonstrate outstanding school spirit and commitment to the University and its students.

The Albert N. Husted Fellowship ($1,000): Awarded to a UAlbany senior planning for full-time graduate study in any area of study at the University or any other accredited university.

The Agnes E. Futterer Memorial Fellowship ($750): Awarded to a UAlbany senior entering graduate study in theatre or a theatre-related field at the UAlbany or any other accredited institution or recognized theatre program.

The Class of 1972 Scholarship ($700): Awarded to a graduating UAlbany senior planning to enter full-time graduate study at the University during the next academic year.

The Adna W. Risley Memorial Scholarship ($500): Awarded to a UAlbany senior or graduate student pursuing a graduate degree in history.

Bertha Brimmer Legacy Scholarship ($1,500): Awarded to a current or incoming freshman or transfer student who is the child or grandchild of an alumnus/a.

DEPUTY COMPTROLLER

The Deputy Comptroller assists with the financial management and accounting of the Student Association under the Office of the Comptroller. The Deputy Comptroller acts as a surrogate for the Comptroller per the Comptroller's requestThe Deputy Comptroller reports to the Comptroller of the Student Association. This is a stipend position, requiring the individual officeholder to work at least ten (10) hours per week per the SA bylaws. Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism advocacy organization, is proud to announce that Albany's Inaugural Walk Now for Autism Speaks will be October 30, 2010 in the Arena at SUNY Albany.

Students at University of Albany under the leadership of student Walk Chair - Jaclyn Renner, have help to organize the grass roots effort to bring individuals and families together as one strong voice for people with autism. We are hoping to attract hundreds of people to an event to recognize the fundraising efforts of many.

ABOUT WALK NOW FOR AUTISM SPEAKS

Toys "R" Us Children's Fund, and Babies"R"Us proudly serve as national sponsors of the Autism Speaks Walk Now for Autism Speaks program.

Walk Now for Autism Speaks is a unique fundraising event which creates a sage and fun day for families who are affected with autism. The day includes a 1 mile walk and Community Resource Fair providing valuable autism resources o the public. Each vendor provides a creative a creative child- friendly activity as well. This year Toys"R"Us will have a booth space serving as home base for Geoffrey the Giraffe. Attendees will also be able to stop by and sign their children up for Geoffrey's Birthday Club and pick up the "Ten Toys That Speak to Autism" handout, a list of toys that help build skills of children with autism, created in collaboration with Autism Speaks.

The Walk Now for Autism Speaks events are the signature fundraising events for Autism Speaks, raising more than $29 million last year to support autism research. This year, over 80 Walk Now events will take place across the United States, as well as Canada and the United Kingdom.

The Student Association Senate, under the advice of Interim Elections Commissioner Chris Arlotta, has approved holding new elections for all living area and at large seats this Monday, September 27 through Tuesday, September 28.

This past Monday and Tuesday, technical errors cross campus were incurred by students who attempted to vote at their respective living areas. According to Arlotta, the issue has been resolved (please note that both the Student Association and the Office of Student Involvement & Leadership are not responsible for any voting irregularities incurred by online voting).

So remember, if you voted before, please vote again to ensure your representation in the Senate.

The Student Association Supreme Court reached a unanimous decision to throw out the “600” policy (elections policy), and placed a permanent injunction on the Senate for fall elections. After the Senate approves language re-structuring the elections policy, SA Senate elections can be held next semester.

In the "Wax Jacobs vs Wimpelberg" petition, the court found in favor of the respondent, Wimpelberg.

In the "Fioravanti vs Rotella" petition, the court found in favor of the respondent, Rotella.

In the "Bonilla/Rotella vs Wax Jacobs/Fioravanti" petition, the court was hung in a 3-3 tie, and affirms the lower court decision of commissioner Meagan Chen, finding Wax Jacobs as President and Rotella as Vice President.

Last week's spirited debate between Karl Rove and Howard Dean was an amazing event that will be remembered as a great achievement in the growing legacy of the World Within Reach Speaker Series.

SA Senate Makes Senators Pay for Autographed Copies of Dean and Rove Biographies

March 25, 2010, Albany- At last night’s weekly Student Association Senate Meeting, Senators were in disagreement about Bill 0910-171. Said bill proposed that $1,040 be transferred from the Supplemental Allocation Budget (traditionally used as supplemental funding for Recognized Student Organizations) to pay for copies of the Dean and Rove biographies.

Dean and Rove will be taking part in a debate on April 8th in the SEFCU Arena for the second installment of the World Within Reach Speaker Series.

The amount of $1,040 was determined by multiplying the cost of Rove’s book by the number of Senators, assuming that not all senators would want to receive a book. Dean’s book is significantly less expensive.

SA Comptroller Steven Berkowitz argued, “Student Activity Fee money is not allowed to be used to buy gifts, and if they wanted to receive a book, they should buy them themselves or volunteer at the event like all other SA employees (who receive books).”

Autographed copies of the speaker’s biographies have been given to volunteers that work at the event, to compensate them for their time.

The bill passed with 16 votes, 2 abstentions and 7 nays.

Due to student backlash, Senate Chairman Paul McCarthy and President Joshua Sussman decided to use the funds from Appropriations to simply front the cost of the books, and Senators and Justices will pay for the cost of a book, should they want one.

Senate Chairman Paul McCarthy stated, “On behalf of the Student Association Senate, given the response of some Senators and the public, I have resolved that it is our duty to our constituents to ensure that all Student Association Senators and Justices, for whom the appropriation was made, should pay in full for the book materials. The line will be appropriated to purchase books so that they arrive on time, and then the line will be reimbursed upon Senators’ and Justices’ purchases.”

The bill also included provision to add a $200 stipend for a Senate Communication’s Aide, and a new equipment line for this position.

Speaker Series Registration Open

We are less than one month away until Karl Rove and Howard Dean come to UAlbany to debate in the Second Installment of the World Within Reach Speaker Series! RSVP via the Facebook Event page.

On the night of April 8th, SEFCU Arena will get heated as the former Bush Administration political advisor and the former Democratic Party chairman engage in a lively debate. Rove is known as “The Architect” of President Bush's 2000 and 2004 campaigns, while Dean is credited with developing the "50 State Strategy" that contributed to the election of Barack Obama and other democrats during the 2008 election.

Everyone must register for the event on the secure registration page. UAlbany students, alumni, family, and friends of the community are able to attend. Tickets must be picked up at Copies Plus in the Campus Center, which is open from 9am-5pm. They may be picked up until 5pm on April 8th at the latest.

Any tickets not picked up at Copies Plus will be held at Will Call in the PE building (across from the SEFCU Arena) on the night of the event. Will Call opens at 6pm and closes at 7:30pm.

All tickets not picked up at Will Call by 7:30 will be redistributed to anyone who wants to attend the event. There were tickets left over at the previous Speaker Series event, so it is worth trying to get a ticket last minute in case you or a friend doesn't have a ticket/didn't register.

Doors open at 6:45pm, must be seated by 7:30pm. The debate begins at 8pm.

SA Spring Elections

This is YOUR chance to be take part in student government and represent the UAlbany student body. On April 14th and 15th, students will vote for who will lead UAlbany for the Fall 2010-Spring 2011 school year. Anyone can run for the positions, which include President, Vice President, University Council representative, SUNY Student Assembly representative, and Senator At-Large.

The President/VP candidates need 100 signatures in order to run. Students may also run for the University Council, SUNY Student Assembly, and Senator At-Large positions simultaneously.

Come to the SA office in CC 116 to pickup the nomination form or download it here. The form is due on March 24th by 4:55PM at the latest. Elections take place on April 14th-15th and voting is done through MyUAlbany.

Fountain Day 2010

Everyone's favorite day of the year is less than two months away! On April 25th, Fountain Day is back and is bigger and better than ever. The UAlbany administration has done a great job hosting Fountain Day in the past, but this year SA will be adding to the festivities by inviting famed rapper Flo Rida into our cherished fountain.

Flo Rida will be performing at 2pm on the SA Splash Stage before the fountain turns on. His single, "Right Round," has made digital music history by setting the record for the highest digital single debut with 636,000 downloads in its first week. The track also became the fastest million-selling digital song ever, reaching platinum status in just two weeks. This worldwide embrace was the culmination of years building his skills and credibility on the underground circuit.

Fountain Day will continue with games, contests, caricatures, photo booths, tattoos, jousting, a bungee trampoline, a mechanical bull, and boxing. You can also win various Fountain Day-themed prizes at times throughout the day. Great food like hot dogs, chips, cookies, and soda will be provided for free the entire time. Finally, the Fountain will be turned on and all of UAlbany goes crazy!

“Participation in Fountain Day 2010 is limited to current UAlbany students.”

Attendance at Fountain Day has risen more than 25 percent in the past two years. In order to ensure the safety of our students in the event area, the University has decided it must limit participation to current UAlbany students. Fountain Day is one of the most treasured student traditions here on campus, and our goal is to guarantee it remains a safe, memorable experience for our student body.

Please note that the Student Association and Alumni Association played no role in this decision.

Important Student Group Budget Deadlines

As many (hopefully all) student group e-board members know, the budget process for next year has already begun. Every recognized and funded student group must submit a budget packet to the front desk in the SA office by 4:55PM on March 10th. The budget packet can be found here: http://bit.ly/cPpNB1

But don't freak out! Members of the SA Board of Finance will be around to give individualized help with preparing budgets each night on March 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, and 9th from 5-8PM. Come to have your budget packet reviewed, ask questions, figure stuff out, and make special requests. These sessions will be held in the West Lounge outside of the SA Office.

Additionally, as mentioned in the State of the SA Address, ALL student groups must submit a list of all members of their group that intend on running for an e-board position. They must provide their name, student ID, email address, and signature to complete this form. Submit it to the front desk in the SA office by 4:55PM on March 8th. New SA Position Available!

The Student Association Senate is hiring a Senate Communications Aide.

On February 17th, the Student Association Senate passed the Senate Efficiency and Accountability Act, which increases the effectiveness of SA Senate by creating more oversight and further documenting SA Senate activity.

This bill added the "Office of Senate Communications" which will be run by the "Senate Communications Aide." Duties include, "documenting Senate meetings" and "transcribing events for the records of the Student Association Senate."

The aide will receive a stipend, which will be decided at the annual budget meeting.

The Student Association's Annual Relay for Life Comedy Show featuring Bo Burnham will be this Thursday in the Campus Center Ballroom. Tickets are NOW on sale at Copies Plus for $10! Also sold at the door. All proceeds will benefit Relay for Life. RSVP via the Facebook Event page.

Three years ago, Bo Burnham was just another high-schooler recording YouTube videos for fun. Today, Burnham has burst on the comedy scene with a full-length LP, a Comedy Central special and a deal to write a film for Judd Apatow. Entertainment Weekly recently named Burnham one of the “12 Rising Stars of Comedy.” In March, Burnham released his first full length LP “Bo Burnham” which topped Billboard’s New Artist chart and was #2 on the Billboard’s Comedy chart in its first week. Four days after his eighteenth birthday, Burnham became the youngest person to record a “Comedy Central Presents” special. The special premiered on March 27th, 2009.

It's true! Former Bush Administration political advisor Karl Rove and former Democratic Party chairman Howard Dean will be coming to UAlbany on April 8th to engage in a spirited debate.

The journalists at the Albany Student Press did some good old-fashioned investigative journalism and released this information in a story posted this afternoon. You caught us red-handed!

But the ASP didn't uncover the full story, so expect some more surprises as the event comes closer!

"SA Concerts Explained" As Seen in the Albany Student Press February 3, 2010

SA Programming Director Reuben Ingber explains how musical performers are chosen.

How does the Student Association choose their musical guests and performers?

Over the past 4 years, I have worked within the Student Association in a variety of capacities, from the student Senate to a variety of jobs in the Executive branch. I currently serve as the S.A. Programming Director, and will explain the process of choosing music artists.

Each year the Student Association receives a budget of $2 million from the Student Activity Fee. The Senate allocates the Activity Fee money to fund our (approximately) 200 student groups (including Five Quad, WCDB, Hillel, etc), Dippikill wilderness retreat in the Adirondacks, club sports teams, intramural sports and student legal services. Additionally, there are funds allocated to the internal Student Association offices, including the Programming Office (concerts, Speaker Series, etc).

It is rumored that a single person within SA picks each musical guest. However the organization bases their decisions on a variety of surveys and focus groups (done each year) to determine the genre of music students would like to hear on campus. The Programming Director works with members of the Executive Branch to make a list of artists that are determined from our student feedback. Then we contact our booking agent who shares artists' availability and prices. From there we determine the concert artist.

The Student Association is budgeted roughly $100,000 for the Fall Concert and $100,000 for the spring. Many would think that this amount is fairly high, but in reality it is not. Putting on a concert is very costly. On top of paying for the artist, SA is responsible to pay for security, sound, lights, stage, hospitality, catering, hotels, staff, and more. These outside production costs average about $50,000 per event. That leaves us with about $50,000 to use to book artists. An artist's fee ranges from $100 (for a local band) to hundreds of thousands of dollars (for big names like Jay Z, Kanye West, Dave Matthews, Lady Gaga etc).

With this in mind, we work diligently with our booking agency to find artists that appeal to our student body and fit within our budget. We keep our ticket prices low because students have already paid the Student Activity Fee. Student Association events are for UAlbany Students only, so we can ensure that the Activity Fee is not used to entertain those who do not pay it. Additionally, our insurance policy only covers students that attend UAlbany. In short, we cannot allow the surrounding community to attend our events to create more revenue to pay for artists.

To directly address many of the Facebook messages and emails that I have received; I would love to bring major artists like Lady Gaga or Jay Z to UAlbany. However for the reasons I have described throughout this article, the Student Association, really, cannot afford it. Because the Student Association has a budget, allocating more money into SA concerts would mean taking money away from student groups, other events and all of the many things that the Student Association funds.

The elections will be held on February 11th and 12th. There are open spots on almost every quad and two At-Large seats, so anyone can run. Here is a full rundown of what you need to know:

-Positions are available for two At-Large Senators, two off-campus, two Empire, one Dutch, one Alumni, and one State.

-The self-nomination forms are due on February 3rd. They can be filled out in the SA office.

-The candidate's meeting is on February 3rd at 8pm in the Fireside Lounge. Campaigning will begin at 12:01am on Feb 4th.

-The elections are on February 11th and 12th. Voting takes place on MyUAlbany.

SA interns aid the Marketing and Programming Departments in current projects. This is a great way to start getting involvement with SA or to build your resume! Interns receive academic credit (up to 3 credits) or volunteer hours.

Student Group Affairs Director:

The SGA Director is the Student Association Executive Board's primary liaison to over 200 student groups. Applicants should have strong ties to current student group leaders in addition to the ability to network with new leaders. Additionally, it is important (but not required) to have experience with Student Association policy and procedure as well as having a thorough small scale programming background (student group or reslife). The duration of the position is only throughout the Spring 2010 semester.

Reel Big Fish and Girl Talk both performed amazing shows that got UAlbany students dancing for hours. The adrenaline-fueled concert had people waving their hands, jumping around, and crowd surfing. Girl Talk was an unstoppable machine as he pushed out incredible mash-ups that got the audience pumped and electrified. Those cases of Red Bull we got Girl Talk served him and everyone else well.

Have a Problem With a Professor?

SA has got your back! The new academic concern form allows any student to request the support of SA officers in the possibility that academic policies were violated.

If a student feels that their professor did not follow official academic policies and procedures, then they can use the academic concern form to file a complaint. Complaints can range from professors continuously missing stated office hours, bias in the class room, or other academic issues.

The SA Office of Academic Affairs will confirm the validity of the complaint before officers start seeking action. Action can include reviewing official policies, speaking with professors, talking to university officials, and using other means to find a fair solution.

Dutch, Freedom, and off-campus residents get voting on MyUAlbany!

On Monday night (10/5), the Supreme Court made a 6-1 decision that found the elections on Dutch Quad, Freedom Quad, and off-campus to be invalid. Other quads and the Senator-At-Large elections were ruled to be valid. The case involved a discrepancy with the number of senators that were elected on specific living areas.

The SA Supreme Court Majority Brief states, "this court sees the elections used to enact representatives on Dutch Quad, Freedom Quad, and Off-Campus in the fall of 2009 elections be null and void. The student body numbers initially used were not reputable, thereby placing into question those newly elected."

The re-vote is taking place Today (10/12) and Tuesday (10/13). It will be the same candidates as before and voting will still be done through MyUAlbany. Only those who live on Dutch, on Freedom, or off-campus can vote.

Homecoming Events featuring General Colin L. Powell

Homecoming weekend is now here. Get ready to see Paul Krugman and Colin Powell!

Here are some selected events for this Homecoming Weekend, October 9-11.

On Friday night, Paul Krugman, winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Economics and columnist for the Op-Ed Page of the New York Times, will be having a reading/discussion at 8 p.m. in Page Hall at the Downtown Campus. More information can be found here.

On Saturday, SA will be hosting a tailgate party in the SEFCU Arena parking lot from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Enjoy food and fun with other Great Danes fans under the big top. Enjoy live music provided by the band, What-Ever!

On Saturday night, General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. secretary of state, will be giving a speech at 8 p.m. in the University's SEFCU Arena. He will be speaking on the delicate process of forging alliances, bringing people and countries together, and promoting universal human ideals of democracy and peace around the world. New Media Assistant- Focus on "new media" and how this plays a roll in reaching our students; including, but not limited to, facebook, twitter, blogs, etc. This person will be responsible for creating and maintaining (and updating) these new mediums.

Student Group Marketing Assistant- Student groups do not have enough resources for marketing their group and their events. Assisting them would include everything from providing groups with lists of vendors that accept purchase orders to helping groups create flyers (many do not have the software to do this).

Assistant Programming Director- Assistant to the Student Association Programming Director. The Programming office coordinates Student Association Events, helps Student Groups plan events, and works in conjunction with the university to help plan events.

Assistant Marketing Director- Assistant to the Student Association Marketing Director. In addition to marketing the Student Association as a whole, the Marketing office also promotes SA general events and departmental events.

Student Association Advocates- Student Advocates for the Student Association. This position, along with Legislative Affairs Directors, is in charge of advocating to the Administration about Student needs on this campus, as well as the State Legislature when they are in session. This position will be expanded greatly from its current form.

Available positions:

Programming Director - Head of the Student Association Programming Department.
This office coordinates Student Association Events, helps Student Groups plan events, and works in conjunction with the university to help plan events.

Marketing Director - Head of the Student Association Marketing Department.
In additional to marketing the Student Association as a whole, this office also promotes SA general events and departmental events.

Legislative Affairs Director - Head advocate for the Student Association
This position is in charge of advocating to the Administration about Student needs on this campus, as well as the State Legislature when they are in session. This position will be expanded greatly from its current form.

Academic Affairs Director - Head of the new Academic Affairs Department
Due to how new this position is there will be a lot of flexibility to what the office will be trying to accomplish. Currently, the first main tasks would be advocating for Students’ academic needs, creating a more visible peer tutoring program, and working to appropriately evaluate our professors.

Intramurals Director - Head of Intramurals Sports
This office creates the schedules and finds field availability for Intramural Sports.

Gender & Sexuality Concerns Director - Head of the Gender & Sexuality Concerns Office
This director works to make the University at Albany a safe space for those of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Through our programs and events we hope to educate and empower the University at Albany student population around LGBT and Women's issues in order to bring about change and equity to our campus community.

Student Group Affairs Director
This director shall advocate for recognized student groups to the Executive Branch of the Student Association. In consultation with the Programming Director, assist the groups with their programming. The Student Group Affairs Director will be a resource for all students trying to, create a new group, make changes within their current group, and create programming with several groups.

The Student Association Elections are taking place March 23rd and 24th on My UAlbany. The Student Activity Fee is also up for a vote this year, as it is every two years. The Student Activity Fee is a fee currently paid by all undergraduate students, each year when they pay their tuition.

The small fee of $85 dollars allows the Student Association to provide them with:

1. Five Quad- Volunteer Ambulance Service
2. Student Legal Services- Lawyers employed to assist/represent students
3. Dippikill- property of cabins and wilderness available for students an hour outside Albany.
4. On campus concerts- fall concert and Parkfest
5. Comedy shows
6. Intramural and Club Sports
7. Funding for over 200 student groups- including Hillel, NYPIRG, ASUBA, College Democrats, College Republicans, Cornerstone Campus Ministry, Fuerza Latina, Earth Tones, and Serendipity.
8. WCDB Radio Station
9. Danes After Dark
10. ATV

If the Student Activity Fee vote fails and becomes voluntary, the over $2 million budget that we currently have will no longer exist. This means that we will be unable to fund any student groups and will be forced to cut nearly all of the events and services that we currently provide.

So on March 23rd and 24th, vote YES to keep the mandatory Student Activity Fee!

VICE PRESIDENT - provide oversight of Copies Plus; supervise executive board and office staff; support President on initiatives

SENATOR-AT-LARGE (12 vacancies) - serve as voice to 1,000 undergraduate students; attend weekly Senate meetings and serve on sub-committee

UNIVERSITY COUNCIL - serve as undergraduate representative to campus board of trustees; provide feedback regarding major administrative policies of the University

Protest Against Tuition Hikes

Dear Students,

As you all know, Governor Paterson and the New York State Legislature have cut SUNY's budget several times this year. With 90% of your tuition increase already going to the state deficit, and a proposed 80% of it going to the deficit next year, students needs to take a stand and ensure their tuition dollars stay on their campuses. Additionally, $40 million of student feeds for items such as health centers, athletics, parking, technology and more is also being swept to cover the deficit. To top it all off, TAP financial aid is being cut, and the eligibility requirement is being raised from 12 credits to 15 credits, making even harder for New Yorkers to gain access to higher education.

In response, the state wide student government, the SUNY Student Assembly, has organized a day to protest the Governor and the legislature. Tomorrow March 10th from 11:30am till 5:30pm students from all over the state will come to Albany and protest at the Capitol. Please join your fellow students in their support to stop cuts to students and help the future of this state. The exact protest site will be the park behind the Capitol building, in front of the Legislative Office Building and Alfred E. Smith building, at the corner of Swan and State.

2009 Rita Levine Award

Daniel Truchan, III, of the Student Association, has been presented the 2008-2009 Rita Levine Award for excellence. This award is given each year to a student leader for outstanding service in Student Association. The award coincides with March 3rd, which is Rita Levine Day. (Rita Levine is pictured to the left here.)

Rita Levine was the Director of Operations for Student Association for eighteen years (1977-1995). This award is one of many ways that her legacy of dedication, hard work, continuity, and extraordinary support of students live on at the University at Albany. We are very thankful to her for her years of service and for her recognition of Dan’s exceptional service to Student Association. Rita passed away on May 31st, 2008. Many thanks to Joyce Dormady, Rita’s daughter, and the rest of Rita’s family for presenting this award posthumously.

SA Elections for the Fall 2009-Spring 2010 academic year

Want to be the Student Association President or Vice President? One of 12 At-Large Senators? One of two SUNY Assembly Delegates? A member of University Council?

President- President of the Student Association for the 2009-2010 school year
Vice President- vice president of the student Association for the 2009-2010 school year
12 At-Large Senators- A Student Association Senator At-Large is elected by, and represents the entire undergraduate student body. They are all responsible to attend one Senate meeting a week, and an additional committee meeting. These are also the only members eligible to be elected as Chair and Vice Chair of the Student Association Senate.
University Council- Each state-operated campus of the SUNY system has a University Council, appointed by the Governor. Nine of the ten members of the Council are appointed by the Governor for seven year terms. The tenth member is a student, elected for a one-year term by and from the students enrolled at the institution. The chair is appointed by the Governor.
2 Student Assembly Delegates- SUNY student assembly delegates. There are two positions available. They are responsible for attending a conference in the fall and spring. The Student Assembly is the state wide governing body. In the fall conference, we vote on resolutions that the EC has prepared for the fall conference. All 64 campuses are represented at these conferences. At our spring conference we elect our new executive board who will serve us for following academic year.

Spring 2009 Election Schedule:
March 11, 2009- Self-nomination forms are due by 4:55 p.m.
March 11, 2009 - Candidates Meeting at 7 p.m.
March 12, 2008- Campaigning begins at 12:01 a.m.
March 23, 2009- Voting begins at 12:01 a.m.

*If necessary, a run-off election will be held at the discretion of the Elections Commissioner.

Homecoming Weekend Activities

We have lots of activities for Homecoming Weekend! We will be tailgating at the Football game, hosting Comedy Night (which will feature Carlos Alazraqui plus special guest from the hit show "Reno 911"), as well as the 30th annual President's Brunch.

Homecoming weekend will be held on Saturday October 25th and Sunday 26th.

The Student Association will be participating in the Tailgate Party hosted by Alumni Association. The tailgate will be held on Saturday October 25th from 2pm-4pm at SEFCU Back Lot, followed by the football game starting at 4pm.

Carlos Alazraqui plus special guest from the hit show Reno 911 from Comedy Central will be performing on Saturday night in the Campus Center Ballroom. Doors open at 8:30pm, show starts at 9pm. We only have a limited number of seats, so be sure to come early!

The 30th Annual Brunch Presidential Brunch will be held on Sunday October 26th at 11am in the Campus Center Ballroom. Cost is $12 for Adults and $5 for children. A performance from vocal groups Earthtones and Serendipidy, plus a keynote speech by Interim President of the University George Philip.

Rita Levine Memorial Service

Special Memorial during Homecoming planned by the Student Association and Alumni Association to remember the Honorable Rita Levine, SA Director of Operations 1977-1995.

Rita was a bookkeeper and office manager, serving the Student Association at UAlbany with distinction for 18 years. Rita had great passion for her position and loved mentoring successive generations of SA officers and staff.

Sadly, Rita died on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, Rita made Albany her home as a child. A graduate of Albany High School, she went on to marry David Levine and to raise a family. It was as a mother that Rita found her greatest joy.

Rita was a role model, advisor and a dear friend of mine. She helped me and many SA Officers throughout the years deal with the pressures and challeneges associated with running student government. For many of us, she was like a second mother while we were away from home. She protected and guided us, yet let us learn our own lessons. She was a student advocate always thinking of our interests and we were all her kids. Rita was truly a unique, elegant, and classy lady.

A Dippikill lodge in the Adirondacks is named for her, as is a merit award, which has been given each year since her retirement.

The Student Association has been asked by leading television network CBS to air two of their new television shows to the UAlbany students. These will be shown at "Danes after Dark." The two pilot shows are...

"Worst Week"

Sam Briggs (Kyle Bornheimer, "Jericho"), an entertainment magazine editor who will do anything to please his girlfriend's parents... but instead becomes a one-man wrecking crew whenever he's around them. Sam and his girlfriend Melanie Clayton (Erinn Hayes) have only one hurdle left to clear as they start their life together: breaking the news to Mel's conservative parents that they have a wedding in the works and a baby on the way. Dick (Kurtwood Smith "That 70's Show"), a stern judge, and his wife, Angela (Nancy Lenehan "My Name is Earl"), are protective of their daughter, and are really trying to let go of the anger they feel towards Sam... after all, disaster follows whenever he visits their house. But despite his best efforts, every time Sam takes one positive step forward in winning over his future in-laws, he inevitably takes two crushing steps back. But with support and love from Melanie who stands up for him despite his knack for making himself look bad, Sam will hopefully charm his way into her family.

A romantic comedy about Bella Bloom (Elizabeth Reaser "Grey's Anatomy") a single, 30-something, successful business owner who is surprised to learn from a psychic that she's already dated her future husband AND there's a catch: if she doesn't find him in the next year, she'll remain alone forever. During a bachelorette party for her sister Daphne, Bella learns from the psychic that she must revisit her past relationships and sort through the mistakes to find her soul mate. Skeptical, Bella begins to analyze every past liaison and failed romance with her close circle of friends: Augie, an endearing guy who has listened to Bella's love woes since college; Vivian, Augie's long-term girlfriend; and Cyrus, who's chronically unemployed and full of wry observations. Once Bella witnesses proof of the psychic's other predictions, her cynicism disappears and she begins her search. Along her trip down break-up lane, Bella is determined to remain optimistic and receptive, believing that when destiny reopens doors to the past, every relationship can matter in the future.

Senate election self-nomination forms are available as of August 25th.

You can find the form online, or you can come and get a form in the SA Office (Campus Center 116). All self-nomination forms are due Wednesday, September 10th at 4:55 pm, and they must be logged in by an Administrative Assistant. All Living Area Senate seats are open as well as one At-Large Senate seat. (At-Large Senators are elected by the entire campus and Living Area Senators are elected by the residents of the area in which he or she lives.)

Lupe Fiasco

Lupe Fiasco is coming to UAlbany on September 20th. Tickets will be available at the SEFCU arena on the night of the concert from 7:30pm onward (look for the ticket window). Cash sales only. Doors will open at 7:30pm, and the concert will start at 8:30pm.
Tickets are $10 and go on sale on September 2nd at Copies Plus. UAlbany students only- SUNY Card is mandatory for admisson.

Welcome to the University at Albany. Currently the student government is working on planning a great fall term. While here on campus for your orientation there will be student leaders coming to talk to you at the Danes After Dark. This is a great time to ask any questions and just see what life at UAlbany is.
